Sonic Layer Depth estimated from XBT temperatures and climatological salinities

چکیده
Sonic layer depth (SLD) plays an important role in antisubmarine warfare in terms of identifying the shadow zones for submarine safe parking. SLD is estimated from sound velocity profiles (SVP) which is inturn is obtained from temperature and salinity (T/S) profiles. Given the limited availability of salinity data in comparison to temperature, SVPs need to be obtained from alternate methods. In the present work, to make use of voluminous temperature data sets from XBT, CTD and other source for estimating SLD, we propose a method of utilizing XBT measurements and World Ocean Atlas climatological salinities to compute SVP and then extract SLD. This approach is demonstrated by utilizing T/S data from Argo floats in the Arabian Sea (40° – 80° E and 0 – 30° N). SLD is estimated from SVP obtained from Argo T/S profiles first and again by replacing the Argo salinity with climatological salinity. It is found that in more than 90% of cases, SLD matched exactly, with the root mean square deviation ranging from 3 – 12 m with an average of 7 m.

Effect of Temperature and Salinity on Sound Speed in the Central Arabian Sea
Sound speed in the oceans depends on temperature, salinity, and pressure and has large seasonal and spatial variations. Since temperature and salinity variations are large compared to pressure, we studied the relative importance of these two parameters on sound speed by analyzing the hourly profiles for one year (16 October 1994 – 22 October 1995) up to 250 m depth from the Woods Hole Oceanogra...

The winter of 1992 was the coldest on record in New Zealand since the 1940s. Temperatures in New Zealand were as much as 3øC below average, with heavy rain and unusual snow. The oceanic surface layer in the southwest Pacific was also anomalously cold over the same period. A World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) hydrographic section (P14C) between Auckland and Fiji during September 1992 foun...

[1] Temperature and salinity data, collected by conductivity-temperature-depth cruises over the Gulf of Trieste during 1991–2003, were analyzed using different methods. In the first analysis, the evolution within a year of monthly temperatures and salinities at the sea surface and at 10 m depth was examined. Temperature at the surface varies with an annual amplitude of 8.1 ± 0.4 C around 16.5 C...
متن کاملImpacts of Shortwave Penetration Depth on Large-Scale Ocean Circulation and Heat Transport
The impact of changes in shortwave radiation penetration depth on the global ocean circulation and heat transport is studied using the GFDL Modular Ocean Model (MOM4) with two independent parameterizations that use ocean color to estimate the penetration depth of shortwave radiation. Ten to eighteen percent increases in the depth of 1% downwelling surface irradiance levels results in an increas...
